Beginner’s Guide to ActionScript 3

If you think about how and why people come to FlashDen, it’s predominantly to purchase great files at great prices. Perhaps a customer is a Flash-savvy Web designer who knows very little about coding at all, or perhaps there’s a customer who is simply tight on time and would rather invest a little money into an existing file on FlashDen in order to save time and avoid re-inventing the wheel. No doubt these are just some common reasons why so many files are sold on FlashDen each day.
Learning From Others
FlashDen’s library can be a huge time saver. But all the files in FlashDen also offer another benefit. They are a rich resource of information about design and code, and offer an opportunity to learn more about code. By purchasing, dissecting and then analyzing ActionScript code from other users, one can learn a lot about ActionScript very quickly, no matter what your current coding ability or familiarity with AS may be.
But to become truly knowledgeable, it’s always important to begin at the beginning. Like a well structured concrete building or a beautiful tree with a strong network of roots, solid foundations are essential.
Adobe TV
Not sure why it took them so long, but Adobe have realized that there are many people that need to be encouraged to make the switch from ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3. Equally, there are many Flash users still heavily reliant on the timeline that need to learn the fundamentals of ActionScript 3.
This is why Adobe have started to create and share free video training for ActionScript 3. And what’s terrific about it is that Adobe really do start out with the fundamentals of Flash and are purposely aiming their training at the beginner. Afterall, it’s important to appreciate that someone has to start somewhere, and not everyone is an expert.
The ActionScript 3 tutorials are being served through Adobe TV, which as an aside, is a great resource for tutorials, interviews and developer interviews for Flash users of all abilities. It really is worth checking out.
Video for Beginners
So without wasting any more time, here are the links to the opening four episodes of ActionScript 3 for beginners presented by Doug Winnie. Each video is very short, digestible, yet informative, and Doug’s almost conversational dialog makes it easy to absorb information. Hopefully Adobe will continue to produce more and more of these videos on a regular basis in order to give any beginners out there the confidence and knowledge to start getting their hands dirty with ActionScript 3. If you’ve put off learning ActionScript 3 until now, today is the perfect opportunity to start.
