FlashDen - Industry News - Interview with Adobe CEO

Business Week have just posted a rare but unfortunately condensed interview with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen.

This was a fantastic opportunity for Business Week to ask the Adobe CEO some user submitted questions. The questions were pretty good, but I felt disappointed with the CEO’s answers, particularly with his justification of the price of the Creative Suite packages. What do you think about the CEOs responses? Leave your thoughts in the comments as always.

Watch the video below or, if you are short on time, read some of the quotes I’ve pulled out from the interview along with a few translations of what is really being said. ;-)

When is Flash coming to the iPhone?

“We’re hard at work… we really want to get Flash Player 10… on all mobile devices. Can’t give you an official date, but be assured that we are working hard with apple to get it on their platform.”

Translation: Adobe don’t know either! And even if they did, they’re not going to tell us when!

What’s the pricing strategy vs free and pirated versions of Adobe Flash?

“We continue to think that the Creative Suite is a great value (for professionals).”

Translation: As long as you guys keep paying these crazy prices, we’re going to keep charging you! Especially European customers who pay more than customers in the US.

What role will social media play going forward?

“We’re very aggressive about getting our products out early in alpha so that our customers can give us feedback.”

Translation: We’re TOO eager to release products and don’t care if they contain bugs or not, because if we use the word “alpha” we can get away with it. Did someone say CS4? ;-)

Is Adobe going to join the cloud computing movement?

“The reality is we see a bigger opportunity about leveraging both the power of the desktop (because these devices have such incredible power), and the connectivity of the Web and the Flash platform is really designed to bridge both those worlds.”

Translation: Possible plans to put more Adobe apps online, much like Photoshop.com?

Where does Adobe see its future or new business development?

“Creative space continues to be a huge area of growth for us, particularly video. Another big opportunity is helping business professionals communicate and collaborate using Acrobat and Acrobat Connect. A new area (we are focused on) is delivering enterprise solutions for governments and enterprises using Adobe Solutions.”
