Filename Conventions for Flashden Uploads (Flashden - March 9th, 2009)
by Scott in General, Site News
In an effort to minimize problems with the files we review and publish, and to ensure the files customers purchase work server-side, we are now only accepting uploads where all files are named correctly.
The Problem
Although a file may work locally, it is not guaranteed that it will work on a server. In light of this, FlashDen now has easy to follow set of rules to ensure that all previews will work and customers won’t have to change the case of the file names of any files they purchase.
Very simple! Just remember to ensure all files you upload that a user needs to deploy your file comply with our new guidelines. The type of files we are referring to are static files such as .swf, .flv, .mov, .mp3, .xml, .jpg, .txt and .html.
- Do not use spaces in filenames. Use a hyphen, an underscore, or capital letters instead of a space.
- Do not use any special characters other than a-z, _, -, and 0-9.
Some examples of what is acceptable:
- video.flv
- data.xml
- index.html
- preview.swf
- really_long_filename.mp3
- image-01.jpg
Some examples of what is NOT acceptable:
- news gallery.swf
- my+gallery.jpg
Exceptions!
Remember, the file naming conventions only apply to files that (a) a reviewer would upload to FlashDen once it has been approved (your preview files) and (b) all main files that a customer would upload to their server when deploying your file. Help documentation, help videos, and .as files do not need to conform to these new guidelines.
We hope that you will see immediate benefits of us instilling this new rule through online preview files with fewer errors. It’s in an author’s best interest to ensure that their preview is going to work 100% on the FlashDen server when a reviewer approves and publishes a file; otherwise, a potential customer might not think your file functions correctly. If your preview file works 100% with correctly named files, users will see your file functioning the way it was intended. Finally, customers purchasing files will see some added benefit too - fewer headaches when deploying your files to their server.
Like with all changes at Flashden, they are done for the benefit of the entire community, not just to make our life easier, so thank you for working with us to improve the quality of files on Flashden. Every little improvement helps. ![]()
