Adobe are actively trying to get everyone to migrate from ActionScript 2 development to ActionScript 3. “Oh no!”, I hear some of you cry. “More homework!”.
Well, while that may be true, at least Adobe are trying to help users instead of leaving the responsibility entirely upto the user.
To assist the migration from AS2 to AS3, Adobe have released the ActionScript 3 migration cookbook. This is a fantastic document that covers everything from listing the benefits of AS3 to dispelling some myths about AS3. But the main purpose of the cookbook is over 25 pages of examples of how you can convert common AS2 code into AS3. For example:
- Creating an if/else statement
- Creating an array
- Accessing root/main timeline of your code
- Opening a URL
- Listening for key presses
- Dynamically attaching and manipulating movieclips
- Loading audio and images
- Loading and reading XML
The main goal of the cookbook is to show designers and developers who may not have any object-oriented programming experience, how the semantics of AS3 are not much different from AS2 and therefore should not present much of a learning curve.

The cookbook is a fantastic resource that is easy to read and understand. If you have been procrastinating about learning more about AS3 or switching entirely to AS3, the cookbook will serve as a gentle introduction and a good way to encourage you to make the switch.
